About Kakapo

Kakapo is an app with a parrot that learns words when you talk to it. It answers with the words it has learned, in a voice made from yours. What it says next is up to the parrot, so streams get exchanges nobody planned.

Using it on stream

  1. Open Settings in the app and turn on “Streamer mode” under “Streaming”. Captions get bigger, and your email and names are hidden.
  2. If you don't want it reacting to game audio or chat, also turn on “Listen only while held”. The parrot then listens only while you hold the mic button. The button looks muted until you hold it.

Inviting viewers to visit

The first time you create a visit code, you need to sign up with an email address, confirm it, and name your parrot. Your email address shows on screen, so do this before you go live.

  1. Under “Streaming”, tap “Create” next to “Visit code”. Your parrot becomes public in Planet Tour, and anyone with the code can visit.
  2. Tap “Open the streaming page”. It shows the code, a QR code, and the buttons “Copy the link for viewers” and “Copy the OBS URL”.
  3. On the PC running OBS, open the same page in a browser: https://www.pyull.com/stream/?c=CODE, with your visit code in place of CODE. Click “Copy the OBS URL”.
  4. In OBS, add a Browser source and paste the URL. Set it to 400 wide and 520 high to show the QR code on stream.
  5. Viewers visit by scanning the QR code or opening the link. In the app, they can also open “Planet Tour” with the rocket button at the top of the screen and enter the code under “Visit by code”.
  • While Streamer mode is on, the visit code also shows in a corner of the home screen.
  • Tap “Stop” and nobody can visit with that code any more. Your parrot stays public; to change that, change who can see it in Settings.
  • Visiting public parrots is for people aged 13 and over.
